NDT, or the Nederlands Dans Theater, is an amazing dance company based in Rotterdam. NDT is incredibly famous as a contemporary dance company. Their dancers have a lot of ballet technique, but can also MOVE! NDT was founded by Benjamin Harkarvy, Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie in 1959 with dancers from the Dutch National Ballet. They were trying to get away from the traditional aesthetics of classical ballet.
To give you an idea of their work, here is a dance called Petite Mort. Petite Mort is choreographed by Jiří Kylián, a Dutch choreographer. He trained at the Royal Ballet School in London, and upon leaving, he got a job dancing for the Stuttgart Ballet. In 1976 he became Artistic Director of NDT. Petite Mort was created in 1991 for the second centenary of Mozart’s death for the Salzburg Festival.
If you are interested in seeing NDT, they are performing in New York for the first time in 7 years! Sponsored by the Joyce Theater in Chelsea, New York, they will be performing at the David H. Koch theater in Lincoln Center April 10-13th. Tickets are a little pricey, but definitely worth it! For more information check out LeenieDanceBlog!
